About
SOSIAN

Sosian is a 24,000 acre private ranch in the heart of Laikipia, a vast expanse of wilderness in the heart of Kenya’s highlands and home to a huge diversity of mammals and birds. The ranch house was built in the 1940’s by Italian artisans, and in recent years was beautifully restored to accommodate up to 14 people in the atmosphere of a private home, now known as Sosian Lodge. 7 cottages lie in the tropical garden overlooking Mt Kenya and miles of unspoilt Africa, each with its own private verandah and ensuite bathroom; the lodge has a swimming pool, tennis court, and organic vegetable garden. Sosian lies at an altitude of nearly 6000 feet and has no record of malaria making it attractive for everyone, especially families. There are a huge range of activities available including walking, horse-riding, camel safaris, game-drives, night-drives, fishing, bird-shooting, archery, tennis and swimming in the waterfalls behind the ranch house. The guiding is known to be of the highest standard and Sosian is well known for its delicious home cooking using fresh ingredients from the garden and its warm and friendly hospitality.

Cattle Ranching

Sosian has always been a livestock ranch, with cattle being the mainstay. In the past cattle numbered up to 2500 head but now the focus is on balancing cattle numbers with wildlife numbers. We firmly believe that cattle have an important role to play in the Laikipia ecosystem. Grazing, manuring and cattle movements have a corresponding impact on wildlife movements. Nowadays Sosian carries between 500-1000 head of beef cattle at any one time.

History

Sosian Ranch started on two separate tracts of land, called Sosian One and Two, by Major Gerald Edwards around 1920, when land was first granted to Europeans who settled in the Rumuruti district. Eventually the northern Sosian One tract was sold and became Loisaba Ranch while the southern Sosian Two tract was retained by Major Edwards as Sosian Ranch until he died in 1977.
