ACTIVITIES

“This is by far the greatest place to stay in Africa! Tons of activities or just relax by the pool. We have stayed in many top lodges in Africa and it is hard to describe how much fun safari can be until you visit Sosian. Our 12 year old daughter did not want to leave. We rode most days, camped under the stars, climbed a huge rock for sundowners, went on night drives, rode a camel and enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere. I wish I could put into words how truly special this place is and how you get a real sense of Kenya. Did I mention more game than you can imagine? Wild dog, oryx, lion, zebra, giraffe, elephant, buffalo, the list goes on and on!”

The Archer Family, UK

We are perhaps best known for our huge array of experiences on offer. Whether you safari by vehicle, on horseback or on foot, you are sure to take home some extraordinary memories. Galloping with giraffe, walking with elephants, tracking lions, or just sitting still and taking it all in, no two days are the same at Sosian. There is something for everyone and we will delight in tailoring your days according to how energetic and adventurous you feel!

Game Drives

Head out into the wilderness in an open safari vehicle.
Embark on unlimited day and night game drives at Sosian aboard open 4×4 Land Cruisers equipped with raised seats for optimal wildlife viewing. The prime periods for excursions are early mornings and late afternoons when wildlife is most active in the cooler temperatures. Surprisingly, the middle of the day unveils its own magic, offering opportunities to witness elephant herds engaging in playful mud baths and refreshing river sojourns. It’s a comprehensive safari experience capturing the diverse behaviors of wildlife throughout the day.

Walking Safaris

Tracking, Walking & Bird Watching.
Walking is the most intimate way of exploring the bush. Led by an experienced walking guide you will learn how to follow animal tracks, recognise dung, insects, flora & fauna and all the other tiny details that you might otherwise miss from a vehicle. You don’t have to be super fit to enjoy a walking safari we will tailor make it to suit your preferences. Whether you are strolling on the open plains or pushing your way through bush along the river, every walk is different, and a great way to be more active on safari.

Riding

The world is best viewed through the ears of a horse.
Riding safaris are the perfect way to explore this remarkable landscape. Tranquil and exhilarating in equal measure, our horses are well schooled and fit making a Sosian riding safari an absolute pleasure. Whether you are looking to ride for a couple of hours from the lodge or would like a longer riding safari that includes camping out, or a more comfortable lodge to lodge riding holiday we can help. We also have children’s ponies and a sand arena.

Fly Camping

Bush dinner & a night under the stars.
Embrace the raw beauty of the bush with a night fly camping, drawing you away from modern comforts for a night in the wild. Underneath the starlit sky, bedrolls set the stage for a night immersed in nature. A delicious dinner by the campfire adds a rustic charm, and as the night unfolds, the distant roar of lion or the cough of a passing leopard surprisingly lull you to sleep. Wake up to the sun rising over the bush, mist rising over the river and your guide rekindling the fire to make fresh coffee.

River Activities

Fishing, kayaking & waterfalls.
Blessed with 15 kilometers of the Ewaso Narok River, featuring stunning 30-foot high waterfalls, Sosian offers diverse aquatic adventures. The daring can leap off the falls into a deep pool, while others find joy in swimming or kayaking in the pools. During high river levels, tubing down the rapids provides an exhilarating day on the water. Alternatively, one can unwind on the riverbank, trying their hand at fishing, adding an extra element of adventure by catching dinner while embracing the tranquil beauty of the surroundings.

Mountain Biking

A safari on two wheels.
Embark on an exhilarating adventure through the heart of the ranch, with cycling experiences that promise to both thrill and connect you to the untamed wilderness. Feel the rush of the wind as you pedal along rugged trails, immersing yourself in the sights and sounds of the bush. Encounter wildlife in its natural habitat, stopping to investigate tracks, plants and insects. Cycling at Sosian offers an intimate and eco-friendly way to explore the vast landscape, creating unforgettable moments in harmony with nature.

Camel Treks

Walk or ride.
For centuries, camels have been integral to the northern Kenyan landscape, valued for their milk and meat. Despite common misconceptions, well-cared-for camels are quite compliant and gentle! Sosian’s camels, notably friendly and sometimes overly affectionate, offer a delightful experience. Camel rides, lasting around 40 minutes, provide a unique perspective of the bush, showcasing its beauty from an elevated vantage point. This peaceful activity not only highlights the cultural significance of camels in the region but also allows guests to connect with the landscape in a memorable way.

Cattle Ranching

Dipping, branding & sorting.
Cattle ranching in Laikipia is a long standing land use that is vitally important for the sustainability of this semi-arid area. When managed carefully, cattle ranching and wildlife conservation compliment each other and Sosian is a perfect example of how this can work. A morning spent with the ranch manager can offer a fascinating insight into how cattle and wildlife co-exist and also provide a fun and often hands on farming experience for all the family. Learn how our cattle are cared for, how much water they drink and how far they can walk in a day.

Cultural Traditions

Meet our neighbours.
Nestled in culturally diverse Northern Kenya, Sosian offers a unique opportunity to explore traditional ways of life in neighboring villages, known as Manyattas. Rich in tradition and untouched by western development, these educational safari experiences provide a glimpse into the nomadic lifestyles of the Samburu, Pokot, and Turkana people. With prior arrangement guests witness nomadic communities’ resilience and coexistence with land and livestock; a captivating experience bridging cultural gaps and fostering mutual respect.

Tennis

Tennis anyone?
We are lucky to have a full size, hard surface tennis court and an array of rackets for our more active guests to enjoy. Challenge your friends or family to a quick match during your stay or plan a full scale tournament. Whether you are a complete novice or a seasoned pro, tennis is a great way to earn a few more calories and get some exercise in if you have spent lots of time in safari vehicles. Our court is conveniently situated close to the pool, pool house and bar, ideal if you decide to settle in for an afternoon of tennis, swimming and relaxing.
