Conservation & Community
AT SOSIAN
Conservation
Sosian is one of a unique group of ranches varying from 5,000 to 100,000 acres on the Laikipia plateau and covers 24,000 acres of very diverse ecosystems. Open grassy plains are home to plains game such as Oryx, Grant's gazelle, Ostrich and cheetah. Laikipia boosts a population of 80% of the rare Grevy's zebra and Jackson's Hartebeest in its region. To the south of the ranch, the bush is thicker and full of acacia woodland which is home to several elephant herds (Laikipia ranking second in the highest elephant populations in Kenya), buffalo, reticulated giraffe, wild dog, lion and leopard.
Eco-Sosian

Sosian strives to be as eco-friendly as possible, and to promote eco-friendly practices in its day to day development. We try and support the local community wherever possible and employ many of them on the ranch and in the lodge. In total we employ 80 staff that is 80 families benefiting from your stay at Sosian. We have been awarded 3 stars by Eco-hotels of the world for our contribution towards promoting eco-tourism wherever possible.

Community
Sosian is situated at a junction of many different tribal areas in Northern Kenya, a very diverse area rich in traditions and untouched by western development. Samburus, Pokots, Turkanas and many smaller tribes live in the area and by special arrangement guests at Sosian may pay a visit to a local village.
Sosian Community Education Project

Sosian has started a programme supporting the local school just 3 kms from the ranch where 330 children attend daily. Primary school education is now free under the government in Kenya but this is not the whole picture. While school fees and teacher salaries are paid, the numerous extras such as books, stationary, desks, sports equipment and even basic sanitation are not covered.
