Eco-Sosian
AT SOSIAN
Eco-Sosian
Sosian strives to be as eco-friendly as possible, and to promote eco-friendly practices in its day to day development. All our rain water is collected from the roofs of the lodge and held in storage tanks for drinking. Used shower and laundry water is disposed of in the garden. We do not cut any trees down for firewood, because of our healthy population of elephants on Sosian, they break down a lot of branches and we use this dead wood to heat water for showers and for open fires in the sitting room, dining room and kitchen. We use a generator for electricity for as little time as possible, and power is then stored in an inverter. Almost all our produce is either grown or raised on Sosian or purchased locally from small communities. We try and support the local community wherever possible and employ many of these people on the ranch and in the lodge. In total we employ 80 staff, that is 80 families benefiting from your stay at Sosian.

Laikipia is a dry area and the land is poor quality, farming is very hard and apart from pastoralism there are few opportunities outside of tourism and ranching for employment. We also strive to train all our staff on site, unlike many Kenyan lodges, we prefer to train the local community in all aspects of tourism and ranching rather than employ people who have had formal training, thereby giving them the chance to progress. Sosian has been awarded 3 stars by Eco-hotels of the world for its contribution towards promoting eco-tourism wherever possible.
