A wide variety of ecosystems is present. The northern half of the ranch is dominated by open grass plains dotted with acacia trees, where herds of zebra, Grant’s gazelle, oryx and other antelope congregate.
The southern part of Sosian is mostly acacia woodland and is inhabited by elephant, buffalo, giraffe and impala. Rocky escarpments are home to the greater kudu and are favorite lookout points for lions.
The Ewaso Narok River (Black River) bisects the southern portion of Sosian and provides habitat for hippo, otter, and prolific bird life along its banks lined with tall fig and yellow-barked acacia trees. At one point on the ranch, the water flowing down from the Aberdares plunges over rocks in a waterfall to a deep pool 30 feet below.
Sosian is also a working ranch that raises a variety of livestock, including Boran cattle, Maasai Red sheep, and Galla goats. It has horses and camels for riding. |
