What could be better than waking up on the first day of your holiday in the comfort of Sosian’s luxury safari lodge Laikipia to the musical tones of the dawn chorus? Affectionately named ‘East Africa’s Alarm Clock’ chorus birds include Crested Francolins and whistling Sparrow Weavers. The early morning is a great time to spot several species of dove; African Mourning, Red-Eyed and Ring Neck as well as the smaller Dusky Turtle and Laughing doves.
Down by the river guests can enjoy a lazy lunch whilst African Fish Eagle swoop down to scoop fish from the water and grey and black headed herons wait patiently by the edge. Kingfishers scour the riverbanks or perch in reeds waiting their opportune moment.
What will you see?
Bustards are commonly seen striding through grasslands. Foraging for seeds, these chunky birds are believed to be Africa’s largest flying birds with male Kori Bustard’s weighing up to 18kg. With their limited talents for flying these birds are tempting prey for both Tawny and Crowned Eagles but their breeding displays are quite a sight, with males inflating their necks up to four times their normal size and their displaying flamboyant tail feathers.
As the day draws to a close intricately patterned Sandgrouse gather near the water and Nightjars emerge to stalk nocturnal prey. Several species of owl can be spotted from the tiny Pearl-Spotted Owlet, often seen around camps and woodlands to Africa’s largest – Verreaux’s Eagle Owl – which prefers to frequent tall trees close to the water.
What better way to experience this birders paradise than from your own luxury safari lodge Laikipia, surrounded by vast open plains and wild bushland where both familiar and unknown species are just waiting to be discovered. Contact Us at Sosian to book your first birdwatching safari.
