-With over 70 mammals, 30 species of reptile and 300 types of bird home to the region, wildlife in Laikipia is some of the most diverse in East Africa.
-So which animals will you see on Sosian’s all-inclusive luxury safari holiday?
-Here is our guide to the top 5.
Near to extinction in the 1990s, Wild Dogs are the second rarest predator in the world! Laikipia however, is fortunate to have several resident packs. They roam across the Laikipia wilderness and sightings are frequent either from a vehicle or on foot. Instantly recognisable by their yellow and black mottled fur and wiry stature, Wild Dogs are fast, fierce and live together in permanent packs ranging from 6-20. Preying on Gazelles and Antelopes among other animals, wild dogs can chase pray over long distances at a speed of 35 mph! Watching them hunt and thrive in the Kenyan wilderness is a truly exhilarating experience.
‘Majestic, magnificent, marvellous, mind-blowing’. People frequently run out of superlatives to describe these awe-inspiring mammals. Laikipia has approximately 6,000 Elephants in the region and is ranked second for the
highest Elephant populations in Kenya. These truly majestic beasts are some of the most spectacular mammals on the planet. At Sosian lodge, observing Elephants cooling off in the rivers and playing in the mud is a frequent and impressive sight.
Sosian Lodge is fortunate to have the beautiful Ewaso Narok River running through the ranch, and Hippos are often seen wallowing in the water and the muddy banks of the river. Hippos are passive for the most part but can be brutish and prone to fits of bad temper! Don’t believe us?
Cheetahs, Leopards and Lions.
Okay, so we cheated (!) a bit here, but we couldn’t choose between these three amazing animals. Cheetahs are renowned for being the fastest land animal on earth, reaching recorded speeds of 109-121 km/h (68-75 mph). Hard to spot given their excellent camouflage, witnessing a Cheetah in full flow will have you chartering a flight back to Sosian every year! Because Sosian is a private ranch, we organise nocturnal drives to look for Leopards and other animals with a spotlight. Experience the thrill of the Kenyan Bush by moonlight! Is that a shiver of anticipation I hear? Lions. The pride of Africa. Brave, loyal and fearless, seeing Lions at Sosian is an unforgettable experience.
The Giraffe is beloved by all who have had the privilege of witnessing it. Giraffes are quite possibly the strangest mammals in existence to inhabit Planet Earth, and definitely some of the most spectacular. With their incredible long-ranging necks, Giraffes roam the Kenyan wilderness in abundance. A remarkable colour and a remarkable creature, Giraffes are many tourists’ most endearing memory of Kenya and the wildlife in Laikipia.
The variety of wildlife in Laikipia is truly exceptional. To find out more about Laikipia’s incredibly diverse ecosystem and the importance of ecotourism? Or heard enough and ready to find out more about the lodge?
