Sosian Lodge the history of your Luxury Safari Laikipia
-In common with our diverse wildlife experience, Sosian lodge has had a diverse history!
-From Post-First World-War, through to the drought of the 1990s, Sosian has survived many challenges and now thrives as a luxury safari lodge in a wonderfully unspoilt ecosystem.
The Post-First-World-War Years
-Owned by Major Gerald Edwards from 1940-1977, Sosian was, (and still is) isolated from the hustle and bustle of civilisation. In those days, communications with Nairobi were infrequent.
-But Major Edwards nurtured and cultivated every inch of soil and built a thriving cattle ranch that still exists today.
Out in the Wilderness: The Bleak Years, 1979-1999
-After Major Edward’s death in 1979, the land fell into disuse and a severe drought ravaged the Laikipia region, almost destroying the region’s thriving ecosystem.
Salvation and Restoration, 1999-present day
-In 1999 a team of shareholders restored Sosian to its former glory. The old ranch house, dating back to the 1940s was rebuilt. Environmentally friendly management and an increasingly favourable climate has enabled the local ecosystem to thrive beyond anything imaginable in 1990.
-Today, Sosian consists of a luxury safari lodge and a cattle ranch in order to preserve the site’s cultural heritage.
-The luxurious lodge, sensitively and tastefully restored in the 1940s, sleeps 14, with more space for three children in the adjoining family cottage. All the rooms are en-suite, and you will have a wonderful view of the Kenyan wilderness from your own private veranda.
-There is also a beautiful and more secluded honeymoon cottage hand-built by Italian artisans.
-As well as a swimming pool and tennis court, Sosian boasts an organic vegetable garden, where we grow herbs, vegetable and fruits such as passion fruit, kai apples, oranges and lemons.
