The Safari Lodge
Sosian safari lodge is a beautifully restored African ranch house that was built in the 1940’s by Italian artisans, and accommodates up to fourteen people in the atmosphere of a private home. Four cottages lie in the tropical garden overlooking Mt. Kenya and miles of unspoiled Africa, each with its own private verandah and ensuite bathroom. The safari lodge is situated at the heart of the Laikipia plateau, stretching from the Great Rift Valley to Mount Kenya. Laikipia is not a national park or reserve however is now a thriving success story in terms of conservation. After descending into ruin following the death of the previous owner and a severe drought in the 1990s, the region has now grown into one of the most densely populated areas in terms of wildlife across Kenya.
The lodge itself now functions simultaneously as a luxury safari lodge and a cattle ranch. As well as all the exciting safari activities on offer each day, the lodge has a swimming pool, tennis court and miles of unspoiled wilderness to explore with our top guides. Cattle ranching has always been present in the heritage of the lodge and so every effort has been made to continue this. The lodge has a herd of Boran cattle that guests are encouraged to interact with.
In addition to working alongside project in the wider community, Sosian Lodge supplies all staff training and so has helped over 100 families through employment at the safari lodge.
Sosian endeavours to exist as much of a self sustaining lodge as possible. Rainwater is collected from the roof of the lodge and recycled. Dead wood knocked down by elephants is collected and used to heat the water supply used for showers. Sosian is well known for its delicious home cooking using fresh ingredients from the organic vegetable garden and for its warm and friendly hospitality.
