Community Education and Health – why Ecotourism in Kenya is so important.
Ecotourism is a vital part of life at Sosian Lodge. We try to support the local community wherever possible and employ many of them on the ranch and in the lodge. In total we employ 100 staff, which means 100 families are benefiting from your stay at Sosian. We have been awarded 3 stars by Eco-hotels of the World for our contribution towards promoting eco-tourism wherever possible.
Laikipia is a dry area and the land is of poor quality, therefore farming is very hard and apart from pastoralism there are few opportunities outside of tourism and ranching for employment. We strive to train all of our staff on site in aspects of tourism and ranching, rather than employing people who have had formal training, thereby giving them the chance to progress.
Sosian has started a program supporting the local school just 3KM from the ranch where 330 children attend daily. Primary school education is now free under the government in Kenya but this is not the whole picture. While school fees and teacher salaries are paid, the numerous extras such as books, stationary, desks, sports equipment and even basic sanitation are not covered.
Most of these things would be considered as the basics for a normal education in the western world but here they are luxuries beyond the reach of many parents. Many of these parents are subsistence farmers living in a harsh environment aiming to provide enough money to feed their families from day to day. This is a community that needs its children to succeed and provide for parents and families in the future.
School visits may be arranged and the staff and pupils are delighted to meet guests from Sosian. Anyone wishing to contribute to the school may send donations to Sosian to a special account set up to support the school and ensure donations are well spent.
